Wrinkle fillers are injectable compounds used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Injectable fillers are commonly used to reverse the effects of aging and create stronger facial features. Patients have been visiting Doctors Alen Cohen and Bob Armin at their West Hills and Encino offices for years to receive a variety of these injectable treatments. The injection of wrinkle fillers is a time-tested treatment method that can be used alone or in conjunction with other facial plastic surgery procedures to achieve a smoother and more youthful appearance. There are many fillers available now to suit each individual’s needs and goals.
Injectable fillers, like Botox and other neuromuscular modulators, have revolutionized the treatment of the aging face. They have provided excellent non-surgical options to begin early treatment of the signs of facial aging and to enhance one’s facial features. However, with the increasing popularity of injectable wrinkle fillers, it is important to choose an experienced practitioner knowledgeable in facial anatomy to perform the injection.
Injectable fillers can be successfully used for the following:
Over the past fifteen years, many new and differently formulated injectable fillers have become available. No one practice carries them all as many of their properties are similar. We here at C/V ENT Surgical Group try to choose the best most proven options to give our patients their maximal desired result. The concept of modern injectable fillers can be divided into temporary hyaluronic acid and particulated hyaluronic acid fillers as well as permanent injectable fillers.
The most popular and commonly used injectable filler today is composed of hyaluronic acid or HA, a natural sugar, and has completely replaced collagen as the preferred injectable material. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the body’s extracellular matrix. As a result, pre-treatment skin testing is not necessary. It is present in decreasing amounts as we age. Thus, it is helpful to replace this natural substance into our body to aid in a more youthful, refreshed appearance. One of the best benefits of HA fillers is if for any reason you are unhappy with the result, the filler can be dissolved and effect reversed.
There are several formulations of hyaluronic acid fillers that are widely used. Based on how it is manufactured and concentrated a wide range of filler properties can be created, most importantly how long they can last. Hyaluronic acid filler effects can be made to last as short as 3 months to as long as a year. Some of the most popular and well know fillers of this category include Juvederm and Restylane.
The properties of hyaluronic fillers can also be adjusted based on the aesthetic need for which it is being used. Less concentrated fillers are made for fine wrinkles while more highly concentrated ones are used for volumetric facial augmentation such as the new Juvederm Voluma XC. It recently gained FDA approval for lasting two years for cheek and mid-face augmentation.
The concept of a particulated filler is one in which it contains resorbable or non-resorbable particles which extends the duration of the filler’s effects. (how long they last) Because of the risk of clumping or irregularities from these particles, they should not be used in the lips or around the eyes (periorbital area) but should be used for deeper tissue injections for volume enhancement as well as for temporary cheek, chin and jawline enhancement. Radiesse is a particulate injectable filler that is a mixture of an aqueous gel carrier and calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres. Radiesse can be used for mid-face and cheek enhancement as well as filling of the temporal regions. This is a common area that is deficient in runners and athletes. Radiesse can also be used to fill in the hand to give a fuller more youthful appearance to the hands.
Restylane® is a cosmetic dermal filler made of non-animal based hyaluronic acid. It can be used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.
Juvederm™ is an FDA-approved dermal filler made from non-animal derived hyaluronic acid. It can also be used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Because it is a smooth consistency gel, it is an ideal filler for fine lip lines as well as lip volumizing and contouring.
Restylane Lyft® is the newest cosmetic dermal filler, similar to Restylane®, but is composed of larger gel particles of hyaluronic acid. It is ideal for deeper injection to provide volume, support, and a structural lift for facial creases and hollows.
Voluma XC™ is the newest FDA-approved dermal filler made from non-animal derived hyaluronic acid. It is very hydrophilic and can be used to replace and augment significant volume. It is primarily used to treat the mid-face and cheeks.
Belotero™ is a unique dermal filler made from non-animal derived hyaluronic acid. It is fantastic for filling in very fine lines, a quality that some of the other fillers lack. It is commonly used around the lips to remove and fill in the very fine lines.
Radiesse™ is a synthetic compound comprised of calcium hydroxylapatine that has a cream-like texture. In some cases, it can prove to be longer-lasting than some of the other dermal fillers. Radiesse can be used in the hands and also to improve temporal wasting and hollows that are commonly seen in runners.
